Brakes are the most important part of the vehicle and should be maintained and examined regularly as they are often ignored. When maintaining brakes it’s always good sense to choose the best brake pads you can afford. There are many types of brake pads available and many regulations and standards by which the brakes based.

In the USA there is brake pad grading system or FMSI numbers. This system is in place to help guide the consumer to the best brake pads for their car. These friction coding letters can be found on the reverse side of the brake pad.

To be sure that you have identified the best brake pads look for the codification of the level of the friction of FMSI. This is the common method of evaluation for brake shoes in the USA and now used by everybody. This system of classification uses the letters that indicate the nominal level of the friction of the reach composed of the brake ranging from E to H. The best brake pads are those with the highest letter.

You can find the grade letters on the back of the brake pads which are indicated with two letters such as GF or FF. The nominal friction is indicated by the first letter when the brakes are cold and when the brakes are warm the second letter indicates the expected brakes effect.

Many suppliers of brakes pads don’t even know about these grades. This puts you at an advantage because when you ask the supplier to see the brakes you can inspect them for the grade. Do not buy them if a friction grade is not available. You can bet that the supplier cannot be trusted to sell you quality products. Do not trust the manufacturer of brakes pads that do dot grade their brakes.

When choosing the best brake pads your supplier should be able to tell you the friction code of the pads you want and the one that are offered. You want to compare it to the ones on your vehicle.

Many USA suppliers are still selling cheap brake pads for European vehicles that have a friction grade of E or F even when up to 90% of the cars use a grade friction of GG or GF. It is not suggested to use these pads because they lower the brake feel on you car. So stick to the grade letters recommended for your car and that way you know you’ll have the best brake pads.
